Regular screening for colorectal cancer(CRC) with the TestMedica Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) will save many American Lives.  National guidelines recommend annual fecal occult blood testing as a proven CRC screening method.  Regular testing with HEMOTEK Fecal Occult can substantially lower the number of people who get the disease and the number who actually die from CRC.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.  It affects both men and women about equally and kills more people annually than either breast cancer or prostate cancer.  The lifetime risk for an American to get CRC is 1 in 17 for men and 1 in 18 in women.  There is over a 90% cure rate if colon cancer is caught early compared to only 8% when it is detected in a late stage.  Colon cancer is preventable and treatable.  Screening every year with a proven FOBT  can lead to the detection and removal of pre-malignant polyps, the cause of most colon cancer, and reduce the risk of getting CRC by 20%.  Screening every year with a proven FOBT can reduce deaths by CRC by 33%.  Colon cancer can strike with no warning signs.  However, one of the most frequent and common early warning sign is blood in stool from the bleeding polyps.  This warning sign is often not noticed because the blood is not visible to the human eye or not acted upon.*  Screening every year with a proven FOBT such as HEMOTEX  can detect 90% of CRC cases in average risk individuals; i.e., those who are 50 and older and have no symptoms.

Risk Factors

Age - Incidences of colorectal cancer increase as age increases.  It is more common in people over the age of 50 years.
Family medical history-1st-degree relatives (parents, siblings, children) of a person who has had colorectal cancer
Diet- High in fat and calories and low in fiber may be associated with colorectal cancer
Polyps-benign growths on the inner wall of the colon and rectum
Personal medical history- A history of cancer or person who has already had colorectal cancer
Ulcerative colitis-the lining of the colon becomes inflamed

Men and women with a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) might need to be screened before age 50

STAGES OF COLORECTAL CANCER

Stage 0 Cancer in very early stage, found only in the innermost lining of the colon or rectum
Stage I  Cancer now involves more of the inner wall of the colon or rectum
Stage II Cancer has spread outside the colon or rectum to nearby tissue, but not to the lymph nodes (small, bean-shaped structures that are part of the body’s immune system)
Stage III Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, but not to other parts of the body
Stage IV Cancer has spread to other parts of the body (tends to spread to the liver and/or lungs)
